Karachi: The menace of targeted killings that bedeviled the city of lights through out the year of 2010, has again hit the city as from Monday night till Tuesday afternoon as many as 10 people were gunned down in different areas following the murder of a local Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader.
It is to be mentioned here that in 2010, more people were killed in target killings in Karachi than those killed in suicide attacks, bomb blast and terrorism related incidents across Pakistan.
The violence flared up on Monday evening when Adil Jafri, joint sector in-charge of MQM Gulbahar sector was shot dead in Nazimabad by unknown assailants. Following his killing violence gripped certain city areas and shops and commercials centres were closed and in some areas pushcarts were put on fire by unknown miscreants.
Following the incident, at least 10 people have been killed in separate incidents of violence in different areas of the metropolis. On Tuesday morning, a man was gunned down in Water Pump area by unknown people. In the afternoon, unknown armed men shot dead one man in Pak Colony while another in Landhi, police said .
On Monday night after the killing of the MQM leader, a man was shot dead near Aladin Park. Another incident of target killing took place in Korangi Zaman Town, where unknown gunmen riding motorbike opened fire on a shop, killing one.
Aziz Khan and Tariq were killed in firing incident in the remits of Al-Falah Police Station on Malir road. Awami National Party (ANP) says both were its activists, and Aziz Khan was the vice President of ANP Al-Falah Ward.
Minutes later, unknown pillion riders opened fire on a bus in Shaheed-e-Millat Road, killing a man.
In some areas petrol pump owners closed down their outlets fearing more violence.
MQM Chief Altaf Hussain while condemning the killing of Jafri urged the government to take notice of the killing of party leader.
Police, Rangers and other law enforcement agencies have increased patrolling in the city to avert any untoward incidents and maintain law and order.
