ISLAMABAD: At least 23 people were killed and many others injured in a blast near a vegetable market in Islamabad on Wednesday morning.
The explosion took place behind the Metro Shopping Center in the market.
Rescue 1122 teams reached the spot and started their work. Injured and dead bodies have been shifted to PIMS hospital.Â
Earlier reports suggested that the blast took place in Rawalpindi but now it has been confirmed that the bomb exploded in the federal capital.
Jameel Hashmi, a senior Islamabad police official, told AFP the blast had killed at least 20 people and wounded 69.
The TTP’s main spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said the group had nothing to do with the attack and urged the government to find those responsible.
Senior local administration official Nauman Yousuf told AFP “it was a planted bomb”.
A bomb disposal official told AFP on condition of anonymity that the device hidden in a fruit box weighed five to six kilograms (11 to 13 pounds) and was packed with nuts and bolts to cause maximum carnage.
