Lahore: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the Metro Bus Service—including 27 bus stations—on Sunday in Nishtar Colony.
The ceremony was attended by diplomats of various countries, including a high-level Turkish delegation, headed by Turkish deputy prime minister.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was also present on the occasion.
Speaking at the event, Shahbaz said that it was a “great” day in the country’s history.
He said both factory workers and owners would travel in these buses. “Patients will go to hospitals through these buses. Our doctors and nurses will also travel through them. In fact, I myself will travel in these buses.”
The project costs Rs30 billion, according to the Punjab government—and has been completed in record time of eleven months.
The 27-kilometer long journey from Gajjumata to Shahdara, which took two hours earlier, would now take 55 minutes because of the new bus service.
For the first month, the bus service would be free of charge for the general public. A modern e-ticketing system has been introduced for the bus project, which would have special reserved seats for women and the disabled.
Punjab Metro Bus Authority has been formulated to run the administrative matters of metro bus system, while an agreement has been made with Lahore Waste Management Company to ensure modern sanitation system at its routes.
Foolproof security arrangements have also been made on the route.
