Pakistan: Militants attack Kamra Airbase

Attock: At least eight militants on Thursday night attacked Kamra Airbase, one of key bases of Pakistan Air Force.

According to sources, the militants tried to take hostages and destroy warplanes standing at the Kamra Airbase.

According to sources, the militants attacked the base around 2.30 am PST, using heavy weaponry including hand grenades and IEDs.

Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt were also informed about the deadly attack.

JF-17 Thunder are assembled at the base and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex is also situated near it.

Normally, more than 30 aircrafts remain parked at the base at a time.

The attack is similar to that of Karachi Naval Base PNS Mehran’s that took place on May 22, 2011 in which militants killed naval personnel besides destroying two P-3C Orion aircrafts.

Army battalions were called to tackle the situation while 111 brigade of the army has reached the spot in order to overcome the deadliest attack.

Pakistan Air force has confirmed the attack but no details regarding the bodies and injured were issued.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik has ordered to step up security at all airports and military installations across the country.

Intelligence reports from the Punjab Home Department had earlier warned that the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was planning attacks on a Pakistan Air Force Base and other military and security establishments in Lahore before Eid.

Air Force Spokesman said that the operation has been completed and the militants are eliminated.

Sources said that Chinese operators were also present at Kamra airbase.

ISPR confirmed end of military operation. The spokesman also said that search operation is going on around the base in order to find the hiding elements.

Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt summons high officials of Air Force. The officials would consider the consequences and reasons behind the attack. There are also reports of three top military commanders meeting today.
