Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has disqualified Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in contempt of court case, setting aside ruling of the National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza.
The court ruled that Mr Gilani stood disqualified as member of the National Assembly. The court said the office of the prime minister fell vacant since April 26, when he was convicted by the seven member bench of apex court for not implementing court orders of writing letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry announced the verdict against Mr Gilani over identical petitions of Imran Khan and Khuwaja Muhammad Asif.
The CJ observed, in the short order that no appeal was filed against the Supreme Court orders.
The court instructed the president to play a role for the continuity of the democracy in the country.
The apex court ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to issue notification of disqualification for Mr Gilani.
