IHC Transfers Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi’s Iddat Case to Another Court

Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has granted the request of District and Sessions Judge Shahrukh Arjumand to transfer the iddat case concerning the marriage of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to another court. The case will now be overseen by Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majuka.

The decision follows Judge Arjumand’s letter to the IHC registrar, expressing his reservations and seeking the transfer of the case due to objections raised by Bushra Bibi’s former husband and petitioner, Khawar Maneka. The judge cited repeated disruptions by Maneka and his legal team during the proceedings as contributing factors to his request.

During a recent hearing, Maneka openly expressed his lack of confidence in Judge Arjumand, prompting the judge to consider transferring the case to another court. Despite dismissing a previous motion of no-confidence filed by Maneka, the judge decided to step aside from the case, acknowledging the need for an impartial hearing.

The courtroom drama escalated on May 29, when PTI lawyers allegedly attacked Maneka within the court premises. This incident occurred after Judge Arjumand retreated to his chamber without announcing the verdict on the appeals filed by Bushra and Imran against their conviction in the iddat case.

In January, Maneka had contested Khan and Bushra’s marriage, claiming that it was solemnized during her iddat period. The trial court had subsequently sentenced the couple to seven years in prison and imposed fines on them. The detailed verdict upheld the contention that the nikah was conducted fraudulently while Bushra was still observing iddat.

PTI’s Information Secretary, Raoof Hasan, emphasized that the court should not be embroiled in political matters, urging for a fair and impartial resolution to the case.

The transfer of the case to Judge Muhammad Afzal Majuka marks a new chapter in the legal saga surrounding Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi’s marriage, promising a fresh perspective on the contentious issues at hand.
