Federal Cabinet Approves Rs. 5.72 per Unit Hike in Basic Electricity Tariff

Islamabad: The federal cabinet has approved an increase of Rs. 5.72 per unit in the basic electricity tariff to fulfill an important condition of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to sources, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had forwarded the decision to increase the basic electricity tariff by an average of Rs. 5.72 per unit to the federal government yesterday.

As per government sources, the federal cabinet’s decision will be sent to NEPRA for uniform implementation of the tariff.

After NEPRA’s approval, the federal government will issue a notification regarding the increase in the basic electricity tariff.

According to sources, under the IMF’s conditions, the federal government must increase the basic electricity rates by July 10.

In accordance with NEPRA’s decision, the increase in the basic electricity tariff will impose an additional burden of approximately Rs. 600 billion on electricity consumers.

Sources indicated that NEPRA has approved an increase in the average tariff for electricity from the current Rs. 29.78 per unit to Rs. 35.50 per unit for the financial year 2024-25, with the approved increase taking effect from July 1, 2024.
