Washington: The United States has reiterated its stance that the detention of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is an internal matter for Pakistan. This follows a statement from a United Nations body calling for Khan’s immediate release, terming Khan’s imprisonment a violation of international law.
During a press briefing on Monday, Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel stated, “In the case of Mr. Khan, you’ve heard us say this before: This is an internal matter for Pakistan. I don’t have any assessment to offer from up here.”
The Geneva-based UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention recently declared Imran Khan’s imprisonment to be in violation of international law, recommending his immediate release and compensation. The UN group indicated that Khan’s detention lacks legal basis and appears to be politically motivated, aimed at disqualifying him from future political office.
Imran Khan, founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been in jail since August and faces multiple convictions and ongoing legal battles, which began ahead of Pakistan’s national election in February.
Regarding a recent resolution by the US House of Representatives calling for an impartial investigation into alleged irregularities in Pakistan’s February 8 general elections, Patel maintained that the US Congress is an independent entity. He emphasized that senior US officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, have consistently urged Pakistan to uphold the rights of its citizens in line with its constitution and international commitments.
Patel further noted that the credibility of Pakistani elections remains a focal point for the US. “This is something that we have continued to raise with our partners in Pakistan, yes. That continues to be an area of focus of ours,” he said.
