Fawad Chaudhry: Imran Khan’s Release Unlikely Under Current PTI Leadership

Lahore: Former information minister Fawad Chaudhry has voiced skepticism regarding the potential release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from Adiala Jail, attributing the improbability to what he perceives as the current PTI leadership’s ineffectiveness.

Chaudhry, who parted ways with PTI following government crackdowns after the May 9 riots, criticized the leadership for what he described as strategic failures despite the party’s significant public support. In a recent statement, he suggested that the PTI should focus on forging alliances with opposition figures like Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), and Jamaat-i-Islami.

He put the blame on PTI leadership for the challenges the party is facing. He lamented the leadership’s inability to mobilize supporters with the same efficacy as Imran Khan, emphasizing that some within the party fear Khan’s release could jeopardize their political careers.

In a video message, Chaudhry asserted, that there is not even a 1% chance that the current leadership can secure Imran’s release. He accused the party’s secretary of information of benefiting personally from PTI while hindering access to Khan in jail, which he criticized as part of their internal “business model”, alleging many PTI leaders don’t want Imran Khan to be released.

Calling for more inclusive decision-making processes within PTI, Chaudhry urged the leadership to allow others to approach Imran Khan in jail to devise a coherent political strategy.

Imran Khan has been incarcerated since last August and faces multiple legal challenges ahead of Pakistan’s scheduled national elections in February.
