Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s Son, Convicted of Lying About Drug Use to Purchase a Gun

Washington: Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, was convicted on Tuesday of lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm, making him the first child of a sitting president to be convicted of a crime. The jury in Wilmington, Delaware, found Biden guilty on all three counts after a trial that delved into his history of substance abuse.

According to reports, Hunter Biden was found guilty of charges related to possessing a weapon despite being addicted to drugs and lying about his drug use. The 12-member jury delivered their verdict after three hours of deliberation. Hunter Biden, 54, displayed minimal reaction, simply nodding his head and patting his lawyer, Abbe Lowell, on the back.

Lowell announced plans to “pursue all the legal challenges available to Hunter,” who still faces a separate tax case in California. Hunter Biden expressed gratitude for the support he received, emphasizing his commitment to recovery.

Media reports indicate that Hunter Biden could face a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and a fine of $750,000. However, since this is his first offense, the sentence is likely to be minimal.

The trial took place amid a tense political backdrop, with President Joe Biden preparing for a re-election bid against former President Donald Trump. Prosecutors presented evidence of Hunter Biden’s drug use, arguing that his addiction legally disqualified him from purchasing a gun. The jury found that he falsely claimed to be drug-free when he bought a Colt Cobra revolver in 2018.

President Biden issued a statement accepting the verdict and pledging to respect the judicial process. After the verdict, Hunter Biden and his family were seen reuniting with the president in Delaware, displaying a moment of familial solidarity.

It is noteworthy that Hunter Biden also faces charges in California for failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes while allegedly spending millions on personal indulgences. He has pleaded not guilty, with a trial set for September.
