Travis Head’s Unbeaten 154 Guides Australia to Victory in First ODI Against England

Nottingham: Travis Head’s career-best 154* powered Australia to a commanding seven-wicket victory over England in the first ODI at Trent Bridge on Thursday, putting them 1-0 up in the five-match series. Chasing 316, Australia reached the target comfortably at 317-3, with six overs to spare, marking their 13th consecutive ODI win across all opponents.

Australia’s chase was anchored by the 30-year-old Head, whose blistering 129-ball innings featured 20 fours and five sixes. He was well supported by Marnus Labuschagne, who contributed 77* off 61 balls in an unbroken 148-run partnership with Head, sealing a dominant win for the world champions.

Earlier in the match, Labuschagne also shone with the ball, taking 3-39, his best ODI bowling figures. England looked poised for a massive total at 201-2, with Ben Duckett (95) and Will Jacks (62) adding a brisk 120-run partnership. However, Labuschagne’s part-time leg-spin triggered a collapse as England lost their last six wickets for just 59 runs, finishing at 315 all out.

Australia’s Adam Zampa, celebrating his 100th ODI, also impressed with 3-49, while debutant Ben Dwarshuis took 1-18 before leaving the field injured.

Head’s century, his sixth in ODIs, saw him surpass his previous best score of 152, also against England. Despite early wickets, including captain Mitchell Marsh for 13 and Steve Smith for 32, Head’s flawless knock guided Australia home, reinforcing their strength even with key players like Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood sidelined.

The second ODI of the series is set to take place at the same venue, with Australia looking to extend their lead.
