US Supports Pakistan’s Operation Azm-e-Istehkam to Combat Terrorism

Washington: The United States has expressed its support for Pakistan’s newly announced anti-militancy initiative, Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. A State Department spokesperson affirmed the US’s backing during a press briefing, emphasizing the shared interest in combating regional security threats.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted the US’s support, stating, “We support Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism and ensure the safety and security of its citizens in a manner that promotes the rule of law and protection of human rights.”

He noted that the US-Pakistan partnership on security issues includes high-level counterterrorism dialogue, capacity-building programs, and military-to-military engagements.

“Pakistani people have suffered tremendously from terrorist attacks. No country should have to suffer such acts of terror,” Miller added, reiterating the shared US-Pakistan interest in addressing threats to regional security.

Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, approved by the Apex Committee of the National Action Plan (NAP) and chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to eliminate terrorism and extremism across Pakistan. This initiative integrates various efforts to decisively combat these menaces.

The launch of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam comes in response to a surge in recent terror incidents, described by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as a “collective multidimensional operation and national vision of the entire state system.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assured that the civilian population will remain unaffected by this operation, which will focus on intensified intelligence-based actions rather than a full-scale armed campaign. The operation has received unanimous approval from stakeholders across Pakistan, including the four provinces, Gilgit Baltistan (GB), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

Despite the approval from government stakeholders, opposition parties such as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam Fazl (JUI-F), and Awami National Party (ANP) and analysts have raised concerns. They demand that parliament be consulted before proceeding with such a significant military operation.
