According to media sources, the Japanese government has encouraged women from the capital, Tokyo, to marry men in rural areas. However, this controversial scheme has been widely rejected. The government is offering cash payments and train tickets to women who agree to marry in rural areas. In an effort to reduce the gender gap in rural regions, the government has proposed payments of up to 600,000 yen (approximately $4,140) for women who marry outside Tokyo.
Sources indicate that Minister of State for Regional Revitalization, Hanako Jimi, stated that she has instructed officials to review the plan and emphasized that reports about the exact payment amounts are not final.
