Hamas has stated that the Israeli leadership does not want the Israeli hostages to be freed and that the Israeli government is responsible for the hostages’ deaths. U.S. President Joe Biden said Nethanyahu is not doing enough to secure a hostage deal.
According to reports, the bodies of six Israeli hostages were recently found in a tunnel. Hamas official Abu Obaida, who oversees hostage affairs, had earlier warned that if the Israeli military advanced, it would complicate matters, leading to the deaths of hostages. Shortly after this statement, six Israeli hostages’ bodies were found in a tunnel, believed to have been killed just hours before the Israeli forces arrived.
Senior Hamas official Izzat al-Risheq stated that the six captives were killed in Israeli airstrikes.
According to a report by The New York Times, the U.S. has also expressed frustration with Israel’s stubbornness on this issue. For the U.S. leadership, the situation has become highly complex. The Biden administration is facing severe criticism globally for its extraordinary support of Israel in the Gaza conflict. The situation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden could also escalate dangerously, with Yemen’s Houthi militia potentially targeting commercial ships belonging to Israel or its supporters.
The Biden administration is deeply concerned that the Israeli leadership is not inclined to end the war on Gaza. The overly hardline stance adopted by Israel is further complicating matters. The U.S. desires an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to avoid further complications in controlling the regional situation.
Hamas warned on Monday that hostages would be returned “in coffins” if Israel continues its military pressure. The group also revealed that “new instructions” have been given to militants guarding the captives if Israeli forces approach.
Hamas spokesperson stated, “Netanyahu’s decision to pursue military action for the release of prisoners, rather than negotiating a deal, means they will be sent back to their families in shrouds. Their families must decide whether they want them alive or dead.” The spokesperson did not provide details on the new orders.
Meanwhile, public pressure is mounting on the Israeli government to negotiate a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas. Protests have been held across Israel on this issue. Relatives of the hostages, along with ordinary Israelis, are urging the government to reach a prisoner exchange agreement as soon as possible to halt attacks on Gaza and prevent further hostage deaths.
