Suicide Rate Among Indian Students Reaches Alarming Levels

New Delhi: The trend of suicides among students in India has escalated to a dangerous level. Previously, the high rate of suicides was primarily observed among farmers who, burdened by heavy debts and crop failures, would resort to taking their own lives. Although farmer suicides continue, in recent years the suicide rate among farmers has come down.

Currently, students across almost all Indian states are increasingly turning to suicide in their despair. Government statistics reveal that suicides among students now surpass those among farmers, and the student suicide rate has even outpaced national suicide statistics and overall population growth.

While the issue of student suicides is widespread across India, states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu are particularly notable for high rates. A report presented at the annual I3 Conference and Expo under the title “Student Suicides: An Epidemic Sweeping India” indicates that the trend of suicides among students has reached an extremely dangerous level, with rising levels of despair among them.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, based on registered FIRs, the suicide trend in India has increased by 2% annually, with a 4% rise in student suicides. The report also highlights that many student suicides are not reported to the police, suggesting the situation may be even more dire than apparent.

I3 is a non-governmental organization that provides guidance to educational institutions, government departments, ministries, and students worldwide, aiming to prepare students for a better future.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report “The State of the World’s Children” reveals that 41% of young people aged 15 to 24 in India feel unable to cope with severe mental stress on their own, indicating a need for professional help.

Among all suicide cases in India, 7.6% involve students. Over the past decade, suicides among boys have increased by 50%, while among girls, the rate has risen by 61%. Over the past five years, suicide rates among both boys and girls have grown by an annual rate of 5%.

One-third of all suicides in India occur in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, has also seen an increase in student suicides. Other notable states with high rates of student suicides include Rajasthan and Jharkhand.
