Moscow: Russia has issued a strong warning to the West, accusing it of “playing with fire” by considering the possibility of allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory with Western-supplied missiles. The Russian government cautioned the United States on Tuesday that the consequences of such actions could lead to a global conflict, potentially sparking World War Three, which would not be limited to Europe.
This warning follows an attack by Ukraine on Russia’s western Kursk region on August 6, marking the most significant foreign assault on Russian soil since World War Two. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised a “worthy” retaliation.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who has been a key figure in Putin’s administration for over two decades, criticized the West for escalating the war in Ukraine. He described Western nations as “playing with fire” and “asking for trouble” by entertaining Ukrainian requests to relax restrictions on using foreign-supplied weapons.
Lavrov emphasized the dangers of such escalation, comparing Western leaders to “small children playing with matches,” and warned of the risks associated with managing nuclear weapons. He also mentioned that Russia was reviewing its nuclear doctrine in light of the current situation.
Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, Putin has consistently cautioned about the potential for a broader conflict involving the world’s largest nuclear powers. However, he has reiterated that Russia does not seek a confrontation with the US-led NATO alliance.

Russia’s 2020 nuclear doctrine outlines the scenarios under which the president might consider using nuclear weapons, particularly in response to an attack that threatens the state’s existence.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy dismissed Russia’s threats of retaliation as mere bluffs, following Ukraine’s assault on the Kursk region. Zelenskyy urged Western allies to be more decisive in their support, lamenting that Ukraine’s military efforts are hampered by restrictions on the use of allied-supplied weapons.
Russia has claimed that Ukraine used Western weaponry, including British tanks and US rocket systems, in the Kursk attack. While Washington denied prior knowledge of Ukraine’s plans and any direct involvement in the operation, Russian officials remain skeptical. They believe that the United States and Britain may have provided Ukraine with satellite imagery and other intelligence to assist in the attack.
