According to reports, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman stated in a recent address that the public is no longer willing to bear the costs of the rulers’ luxuries. He called for taxes to be imposed on feudal lords and mentioned that people from all walks of life are participating in a peaceful strike across the country, from Chitral to Karachi.
He further stated, “We will do what is in the best interest of the nation. The public is unwilling to continue paying for the extravagances of the rulers. Taxes should be imposed on the feudal class, and the ruling class should reduce their expenses.” He also criticized the government for introducing schemes under the guise of being trader-friendly, asserting that no traders’ association would fall for the government’s deception.
The traders are leading this nationwide strike in protest against heavy electricity bills and taxes. From Karachi to Khyber, business centers are closed, markets in Karachi are deserted, and all major shops and markets are completely shut.
Due to the strike, transportation services are also operating below normal capacity, and some fuel stations are closed in certain areas. In Sher Shah and Mominabad, traders blocked roads, burned tires, and held intense protests. Additionally, some cities have closed educational institutions in support of the strike.
Meanwhile, both Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and Jamaat-e-Islami have announced their support for the nationwide shutter-down-strike.
