South Africa Plans to Use Explosives to Eradicate Rodents Eating Live Birds

Cape Town: The South African government has proposed using explosives to eradicate rodents that are eating live water birds on an island. The rodents are not only consuming the eggs of some of the world’s most important seabirds but have also begun attacking the birds themselves.

According to media reports, Mark Anderson, the CEO of a prominent bird conservation organization in South Africa, BirdLife, stated that the rodents on Marion Island have started attacking water birds. The island is home to Albatrosses and other seabirds, which are considered among the world’s most valuable water birds.

Anderson further explained that they plan to bomb the island with rodenticide-filled pellets to eliminate the rodents that are preying on albatrosses and other seabirds. He noted that 19 out of 29 species of seabirds breeding on the island are at risk of local extinction. The attacks by rodents have increased in recent years, and the birds lack the ability to mount a defense as they are not naturally adapted to ground predators.
