Karachi: Two people were killed and nine others injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a rally organized by Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) in the Golimar area on Sunday. The attack, which occurred as the rally was passing through Rizvia.
According to police, the attackers, who remain unidentified, ambushed the rally and pelted stones at the participants, sparking chaos and panic. The situation rapidly escalated into violent clashes between two religious groups, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
Following the attack, the situation in the area became highly tense following the incident, with angry individuals setting vehicles ablaze. Additional IG Karachi, Javed Alam Odho, stated that a heavy police presence had arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control, with SSP Central also present on-site.
Police Surgeon Dr. Sumiya confirmed that the bodies of the deceased were transported to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Civil Hospital, while the injured were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Civil Hospital, and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
The deceased were identified as 25-year-old Junaid Mehdi and 18-year-old Umair Sultan, alias Sherry. The injured, several of whom are in critical condition, were transported to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Civil Hospital Karachi. Among the injured were Muhammad Ibrahim, 26; Kausar Abbas, 35; Hamza Shafiq, 17; Muhammad Hanzala, 30; Muhibullah, 28; Hazrat Umer, 30; and Abdul Basit.
The Karachi Police Chief reported that Rangers’ personnel were deployed, and strict action would be taken against those involved in the firing. Meanwhile, The Interior Minister of Sindh has ordered the immediate arrest of the culprits. Sindh Interior Minister Zia Lanjhar has requested an immediate report from police officials and directed urgent measures for the arrest of the perpetrators and the restoration of peace.
Zia Lanjhar emphasized that no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands or disrupt the peace of the city.
