Lahore: The federal government has decided to shut down the Utility Stores Corporation across the country due to lack of funds.
According to reports, the Secretary of Industry and Production stated that the federal government is making this decision due to a lack of funds. The Right Sizing Committee, which includes various ministries, has prepared the proposals for this decision.
Once the cabinet approves it, a timeline will be set, and the stores will be closed accordingly. The Secretary also mentioned that the Right Sizing Committee’s proposals for closing other institutions will also require cabinet approval.
During a Senate Standing Committee meeting, Senator Saifullah Niazi inquired whether the government was planning to shut down Utility Stores. The Secretary of Industry and Production confirmed that the government is indeed moving forward with this decision and is working on reassigning employees to other departments.
It is noteworthy that the prices of goods at 4,400 Utility Stores across the country have already surpassed those in the open market. For example, the price of a 10-kilogram bag of flour has increased from 650 to 1,500 rupees, ghee from 380 to 450 rupees, and sugar from 109 to 160 rupees.
