1,000 Women Killed Annually in Pakistan in the Name of Honor: Report

Lahore: A report has revealed that over 1,000 women are killed annually in Pakistan in the name of honor. In Punjab alone, more than 10,000 incidents of violence against women were reported in the first four months of the previous year.

According to media reports, an organization working for women’s rights conducted a comprehensive survey on the violence and oppression faced by women. The survey revealed that among married women aged 15 to 49, 23% have experienced physical violence, 26% have been subjected to degrading behavior, and 5% have faced sexual violence at the hands of their husbands.

The organization further reported that while several institutions exist in Punjab for the protection and justice of women, political governments tend to prioritize establishing new institutions over strengthening and activating the existing systems.

They also mentioned that organizations like Al-Khidmat Women and others are working extensively for the welfare of women. However, due to a lack of government support, these organizations face significant challenges in their efforts to advocate for women’s rights.

It is worth noting that the Punjab government established the first Violence Against Women Center (VAWC) in Multan in 2017 to provide justice and protection to women victims of violence. This center offers a range of services, including police assistance, physical and psychological health treatment, counseling, and legal support.
