Bushra Bibi Discharged from 12 Cases Related to May 9 Incidents

Rawalpindi: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has discharged Bushra Bibi, the wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, from 12 cases related to the May 9, 2023, incidents.

The ATC Judge Malik Ejaz Asif heard the cases against Bushra Bibi at Adiala Jail, where the police had requested her physical remand. The court conducted a detailed hearing on the police’s request for Bushra Bibi’s remand in the May 9 cases and subsequently rejected the request.

The police had argued that they needed to investigate Bushra Bibi in connection with 12 cases, including the attack on the GHQ. However, Bushra Bibi’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, presented arguments against the police’s requests in the ATC.

After the hearing, Barrister Salman Safdar, speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail, stated that the court heard the 12 cases related to the May 9 incidents in which Bushra Bibi was implicated based on various statements. However, the court found no legal basis for these statements.

The court, after hearing detailed arguments, discharged Bushra Bibi from all the cases and rejected the police’s request for her physical remand. The prosecution had presented three statements claiming Bushra Bibi’s involvement in the May 9 incidents, but the court dismissed the prosecution’s evidence, ruling that the statements from co-accused held no legal value.

Barrister Salman Safdar welcomed the court’s decision, noting that both sides had presented detailed arguments and the court had ultimately rejected the prosecution’s evidence. He also remarked that the court questioned the silence over the issue for one year and three months after the May 9 events.

He mentioned that while Imran Khan was acquitted in the cipher case, the decision has yet to be finalized. The government has the right to challenge today’s decision. He emphasized that as a professional lawyer, he does not criticize judicial decisions, even those made in the dead of night, and that today’s ruling may have implications for the cases against the PTI founder.
