Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has announced plans to launch a cable car system by 2025, providing easier access to the revered Cave of Hira on Mecca’s Jabal Al Noor. The cave holds immense religious significance for Muslims as the site is where the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) received his first revelation.
The cable car system will connect visitors to the cave, located 634 meters above sea level and approximately 4 kilometers from the Grand Mosque, overcoming the challenges posed by the mountain’s steep and rugged terrain. The initiative is part of a broader development plan that includes the completion of the Hira Cultural District and the opening of three new museums in Jabal Omar, also scheduled for 2025.
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah highlighted the importance of Jabal Al Noor and the Cave of Hira in Islamic heritage, emphasizing the site’s spiritual significance. Fawaz Al-Muhrej, CEO of Samaya Investment Company, which is managing the project, confirmed that final preparations for the cable car system are underway, ensuring that the project will meet its 2025 deadline.
In addition to the cable car system, the Mount Thor Cultural District, an integrated neighborhood offering various services, will also be launched in 2025, further enhancing the infrastructure supporting religious tourism in the region.
