New Delhi: As the case of a junior doctor being raped and murdered by Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the police of Kolkata continues to spark protests across the country, a new incident has emerged from the Indian state of Haryana, specifically in the city of Rohtak. A medical student has accused a resident doctor from the Dental College and Hospital of raping her. The police have registered a case.
Rohtak’s Deputy Superintendent of Police, Virender Singh, stated that a student from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences filed a written complaint with the police, alleging that an MD (Anatomy) student kidnapped and raped her.
The student claims that on August 16, the resident doctor abducted her and took her to Ambala and Chandigarh, where he sexually assaulted her. The police have registered a case against the doctor, but they have not yet found evidence to support the rape allegations.
The student also uploaded a video on social media in which she tearfully shows some marks on her body and claims that the doctor had been harassing her for seven months, threatening her with dire consequences if she told anyone.
The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences has expelled the suspect and banned him from entering the college premises.
Rape cases are rapidly increasing in India, with many incidents occurring in remote and rural areas that often go unreported. A recent case in Tamil Nadu involved the gang rape of a young girl by eight men, one of whom was a member of a major political party.
The issue of women’s safety in Indian society is becoming increasingly severe. The administration of several major cities has urged women to avoid traveling alone and to stay indoors at night. However, human rights groups have opposed this advice, arguing that the right to move freely at night is a basic human right that should not be restricted. Protests have taken place in various cities, with demonstrators asserting that the right to go out at night should not be hindered.
