If You See ‘Purple Markings’ on Trees, Leave the Area Immediately

In the United States, if you notice purple markings on trees, you should leave the area without hesitation.

According to the report, in almost two dozen states in the U.S., a purple mark on a tree in the woods signifies private property, and the practice may vary depending on the region. The size of the purple marks and the distance between them is typically around 8 inches long, 1 to 2 inches wide, and located approximately 3 to 5 feet above the ground.

Landowners where these purple markings are present might be heavily armed and could potentially attack anyone who trespasses on their land. The markings are clearly visible to anyone passing near the trees.

The report notes that some states use orange, red, or blue colors, but purple is commonly used in states like Florida, Texas, Alabama, and South Carolina. About 24 states have laws that use purple markings on trees to indicate property boundaries.
