Bangladesh Announces Continued Support for Rohingya Muslims

Dhaka: Dr. Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, has announced that the country will continue to assist Rohingya Muslims who have migrated from Myanmar. Efforts to fully restore the garment sector in Bangladesh will also continue.

In his first major policy address on Sunday, Dr. Yunus stated that Rohingya Muslims are facing severe racism and terrorism. They are being prevented from staying in their own regions. In Myanmar, there is the military on one side and the Arakan Army on the other, both inflicting extreme mistreatment and death upon the Rohingya Muslims. The Muslim world should step forward to offer full support.

Addressing foreign diplomats and United Nations representatives about the interim government’s priorities, Dr. Yunus noted that while the world is aware of the plight of Rohingya Muslims, no one is stepping up to help them. The international community should play its role to ensure that Rohingyas can return to their homeland with dignity. The United Nations should lead efforts in this regard.

Over one million Rohingya Muslims, who have been oppressed by Myanmar’s military regime and extremist elements, have sought refuge in Bangladesh.

Dr. Yunus mentioned that a major priority for the interim government is to quickly restore the garment sector, which plays a crucial role in the country’s $55 billion annual exports, contributing up to 85%. He explained that severe political instability in Bangladesh over the past two months has halted economic activity, leading many large foreign firms to shift their orders to India and other countries.

The interim government is striving for the rapid restoration of the garment sector, and industrial operations will continue under all circumstances. Bangladesh has over 3,500 garment factories.
