UK: Woman Sentenced to 15 Months for Threatening to Bomb a Mosque

London: UK’s Chester Crown Court has sentenced a woman to 15 months in prison for threatening to bomb a mosque.

According to British media, a 53-year-old woman, Julie Sweeney, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for posting hateful messages about Muslims and a mosque during violent incidents in Southport. In a Facebook post, she called for a mosque to be “blown up with the adults inside.”

Julie Sweeney, 53, from Church Lawton near Alsager, pleaded guilty to sending a communication threatening death or serious harm during her appearance at Chester Crown Court. Julie stated that she made the post out of anger and regretted her actions, claiming that she did not intend to spread fear and would delete the post.

In addition, legal action is ongoing against those arrested for their involvement in the riots following the stabbing deaths of young girls in Southport. Among them, a Rotherham man was jailed after being identified from TikTok footage as part of a mob that stormed a hotel housing asylum seekers, while others have been sentenced for assaults during anti-immigration protests and riots in various cities.

The British court sentenced two men, 26-year-old Connor Whiteley and 49-year-old Trevor Lloyd, to three years in prison for racism, disorder, and incitement to violence. In South Yorkshire, 60-year-old Glenn Guest was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison for dragging a police officer, while 34-year-old Dominic Capaldi in Bristol was sentenced to 34 months for rioting.

It is noteworthy that the racial riots in the UK began after three girls were killed in a stabbing attack by an armed man in Southport. A false rumor was then spread on social media that the attacker was a Syrian migrant, leading right-wing extremists to launch a hate campaign against migrants and Muslims, with attempts to target mosques. In response, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced measures to protect mosques and ordered swift punishment for the culprits.
