Vinesh Phogat’s Appeal Against Olympic Disqualification Rejected, No Olympic Medal

Paris: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal. Vinesh Phogat had reached the final in the 50 kg category. However, on the day of the final, her weight was found to be 100 grams over the limit in the morning, rendering her ineligible to compete in the final.

Vinesh Phogat had filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing that since she had reached the final, she should be awarded at least a silver medal, even though she was disqualified from the final.

Her weight had suddenly increased by two kilograms. In preparation for the final, she stopped eating and drinking for two days and exercised intensively to reduce her weight but failed to shed the extra 100 grams.

Vinesh Phogat’s excessive exercise led to physical complications. In an effort to lose weight, she even avoided drinking water, which severely affected her health, leading to her hospitalization.

Vinesh Phogat was hopeful that the Court of Arbitration for Sport would rule in her favor. The Indian media had also launched an official campaign supporting her cause.

Dozens of media outlets were publishing daily reports, seemingly attempting to exert moral pressure on the relevant authorities. There was a strong effort to create sympathy for Vinesh, but the international sports court ruled according to established principles and regulations.
