Sheikh Hasina’s First Statement: Demands Investigation into Deaths During Student Movement

Dhaka: After resigning from her position and moving to India, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has made her first public statement demanding an investigation into the deaths that occurred during the student movement in the country.

On Facebook, Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajib Wazed, shared a message in Bengali on behalf of his mother, in which the former Prime Minister stated that the movement, which began last July, led to disruption, fear, and tension.

She mentioned in her statement that many individuals, including students, teachers, police officers, female police officers, workers, and members of the Awami League and allied organizations, fell victim to acts of terrorism and aggression.

Sheikh Hasina expressed sympathy with the citizens who lost their loved ones and called for a comprehensive investigation into those involved in the murders and for the responsible parties to be punished.

She noted that in memory of the events of August 15, 1975, a memorial museum was constructed at Banga Bandhu Bhaban by the general public, which attracted visitors from both within the country and abroad. She had worked hard for her people, expecting to see results, but lamented that this effort has now been overshadowed.

In her statement, Sheikh Hasina also paid tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated on August 15, 1975. She mentioned that at that time, her mother Begum Fazilatunnesa, her three brothers Captain Sheikh Kamal, Lieutenant Sheikh Jamal, their newlywed brides, and her 10-year-old younger brother Sheikh Russell were also brutally killed.

The former Prime Minister also recalled that her uncle Sheikh Nasir, Military Secretary Brigadier Jamiluddin, and police officer Siddique Rahman were killed. She paid tribute to all those who were killed at that time.

Sheikh Hasina requested that August 15 be observed with full honor as a national day of mourning and asked for prayers for the deceased.
