A few days after postponing a two-week-long sit-in in Rawalpindi, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan’s leader, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, announced a new protest in collaboration with the business community.
Speaking to the media in Islamabad, he stated, “Consultations with traders are ongoing, and we have various options. We will hold a peaceful protest in coordination with trade associations.”
This announcement comes after Jamaat-e-Islami temporarily called off its 14-day sit-in last week following successful negotiations with the government regarding demands to reduce rising electricity rates and review agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs). Hafiz Naeem warned, “We are postponing the sit-in, not ending it. If the government fails to honor the agreement, we will return to the streets.”
The decision was made after several rounds of talks between a Jamaat-e-Islami delegation, led by Liaqat Baloch, and the government team, including Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, which resulted in an agreement that the government was supposed to implement.
During the press conference, Hafiz Naeem criticized the government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the country. He remarked, “The security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan is worsening, dacoits are ruling Sindh, and the situation in Punjab has become even more dire.”
Expressing concern over the current economic situation, the Jamaat-e-Islami chief noted, “80% of the youth are planning to leave the country.” He added that the increasing tax burden on the public has exacerbated the situation.
He demanded a reduction in taxes on the salaried class and warned that if the government does not fulfill the agreement, Jamaat-e-Islami will once again initiate a protest movement. “The government has 40 days left, and we have several protest options available.”
