Lahore: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has stated that Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hameed continued to make efforts to become the head of the army until the last moment. Faiz Hameed sent messages to Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif asking them to appoint him as Army Chief.
In a conversation with a private TV channel, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif mentioned that as General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s retirement approached, Faiz Hameed made efforts to become Army Chief until the last 24 hours.
Khawaja Asif said that former Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa also continuously communicated with him and his party leadership, requesting cooperation for General Faiz. General Faiz also contacted them and even apologized to Nawaz Sharif.
The Defense Minister revealed that General Bajwa wanted either an extension or the appointment of Faiz Hameed as Army Chief. In the end, he provided various options to their government, suggesting alternatives if Lieutenant General Faiz was not appointed as Army Chief, but not to appoint the current Army Chief Asim Munir. General Bajwa would travel in a helicopter to meet and the then Punjab Assembly Speaker Ahmad Ali Khan can testify to this.
Khawaja Asif noted that the political events following Faiz Hameed’s retirement were influenced by him, emphasizing that General (retd) Bajwa and Faiz Hameed had a deep personal connection, with both their fathers-in-law also having a close relationship.
He added that Faiz Hameed could not step back because someone who has wielded unlimited powers cannot easily accept being sidelined. Faiz Hameed was directly or indirectly involved in these events, providing logistical support, setting targets, and offering experience in conspiracy.
