Washington: In his first interview since withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, former U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the threat posed by Donald Trump to American democracy.
Speaking on CBS News’ Sunday Morning program, Biden explained that his decision to step aside was driven by concerns that his continued candidacy would be a distraction and potentially weaken the Democratic Party’s chances of defeating Trump.
Biden, who announced his withdrawal from the race in July, backed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate. “Although the race was close, I knew that staying in would shift the focus away from important issues and towards internal party conflicts,” Biden said. “The most critical task is to maintain democracy and ensure that Trump is defeated.”
Biden also touched on the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, expressing hope for a ceasefire before the end of his presidency. He highlighted efforts by his administration, along with international partners, to prevent the conflict from escalating into a broader regional war. “The plan I proposed, which has been endorsed by the G7 and the UN Security Council, remains viable,” Biden stated, reaffirming his commitment to peace efforts in the region.
Despite Biden’s withdrawal, polls show a shift in the electoral dynamics with Harris now leading Trump in national surveys. However, questions remain within the Democratic Party regarding Harris’s ability to secure victory against Trump in the upcoming election.
Biden’s stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza has been a significant factor in his declining poll numbers, with critics pointing to his support for Israel as a major issue. Nonetheless, Biden assured that his team is working tirelessly to broker a ceasefire and bring stability to the region.
