Drinking Water from Plastic Bottles Increases Blood Pressure: Medical Research

Islamabad: A new study has raised concerns about the health impacts of drinking from plastic bottles, suggesting that microplastics may contribute to elevated blood pressure. The research, conducted by the Department of Medicine at Danube Private University in Austria, found that participants experienced a notable decrease in blood pressure after switching to tap water and avoiding fluids from plastic and glass bottles for two weeks.

The study, published in the journal Microplastics, observed that blood pressure, particularly diastolic pressure—the pressure in arteries when the heart rests—declined significantly when participants consumed only tap water. This decline is attributed to a reduction in plastic particles, which are known to enter the bloodstream through beverages stored in plastic containers.

Microplastics, tiny fragments resulting from the degradation of plastic due to UV radiation or physical impact, have been identified in various body fluids and tissues, including saliva, heart tissue, liver, kidneys, and even placenta. The new research indicates that these particles might contribute to cardiovascular issues by increasing blood pressure.

Researchers noted that the trend observed in their study suggests that reducing the consumption of beverages from plastic containers could potentially lower blood pressure and, by extension, reduce cardiovascular risk. They concluded that while further research is needed, the findings highlight the potential health benefits of minimizing plastic use.

The study’s authors recommend avoiding plastic bottles where possible and suggest that greater awareness of microplastic contamination could lead to significant public health improvements.
