Dhaka: Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus has agreed to lead Bangladesh’s interim government, following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and intense student-led protests that have rocked the nation. The announcement was confirmed by The Daily Star, citing reliable sources.
Dr. Yunus initially hesitated when approached by student leaders, citing his existing commitments. However, after persistent requests and reflecting on the sacrifices made by the students and ordinary citizens, Yunus agreed to take on the responsibility. “If the students can sacrifice so much, if the people of the country can sacrifice so much, then I also have some responsibility,” Yunus was quoted as saying.
The Nobel laureate, who is currently abroad for treatment is expected to return to Bangladesh soon to assume his new role.
In a related development, Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the 12th parliament on Tuesday, responding to a deadline set by the student protesters. The dissolution followed discussions with military leaders, political figures, and civil society representatives. The move came after the student protesters had issued a 3 pm deadline for the dissolution, threatening further actions if their demands were not met.
Additionally, the President’s office announced the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and began the process of freeing individuals detained between July 1 and August. The decision to dissolve parliament and release detainees is seen as a response to the escalating protests demanding significant political changes.
