Has Sheikh Hasina Decided to Quit Politics?

Dhaka: Following recent events in Bangladesh, a significant question has arisen: has Sheikh Hasina Wajed decided to retire from politics? Sheikh Hasina is 76 years old and has so far maintained admirable health, remaining quite active even at her old age.

In an interview with a British broadcasting agency in London, Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, stated that his mother will not return to politics. Sajeeb mentioned that Sheikh Hasina is deeply regretful about recent events because she had worked diligently for the country.

Sajeeb Wazed had served as an advisor on information and communication technology during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.

Sajeeb Wazed noted that his mother had decided to resign on Sunday and leave the country due to pressure from the family regarding her safety. The family wanted her to ensure her protection.

He also mentioned that some family members are still in Bangladesh, though it is difficult to provide accurate information about them due to communication issues.

When asked about the government’s use of force to suppress student protests, Sajeeb Wazed said that in one attack, protesters had killed 13 police officers in Sirajganj. He questioned what the police could do if a group attacks and refuses to comply—should they just endure the violence?

Sajeeb Wazed expressed concern that Bangladesh might face economic instability once again. He noted that fifteen years ago, the country was on the brink of economic collapse. Although extraordinary efforts were made over the past decade and a half to stabilize the economy, it now appears that all that hard work may be in vain.
