Islamabad: The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has taken notice of the increasing sale of antibiotics without prescriptions. Instructions have been issued to all provincial departments to stop selling medications without a doctor’s prescription.
DRAP CEO Asim Rauf stated that the sale of antibiotics without a prescription must be stopped immediately. He also directed changes to be made to the regulations governing the sale of antibiotics.
Dr. Asim Rauf noted that resistance to antibiotics among disease-causing bacteria is increasing. While antibiotics are sold by prescription around the world, in Pakistan, they are sold like candies.
Action has also been proposed against doctors who prescribe unnecessary antibiotics. Additionally, measures will be taken against pharmaceutical companies engaged in unethical marketing practices. Approximately 135 billion rupees worth of antibiotics are sold annually in Pakistan.
