Kashmir Black Day Being Observed Across Pakistan Today

Islamabad: Today marks the Kashmir Black Day, observed in protest against the Indian government’s move to revoke the special status of occupied Kashmir.

August 5, 2019, is remembered as a dark day in history, marking five years since the special status of occupied Kashmir was abolished. Kashmiris living on both sides of the Line of Control and around the world are commemorating August 5 as Kashmir Black Day.

The purpose of observing Kashmir Black Day is to convey to the world that Kashmiris do not accept India’s illegal occupation and reject the illegal move of August 5, 2019, which abrogated the special status of occupied Kashmir.

The Modi government violated United Nations resolutions and international laws by abolishing Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution, which had granted special autonomous status to occupied Kashmir and imposed a military siege on the region.

Through the revocation of these articles, the people of the rest of India were given the right to acquire property and permanently settle in Indian-administered Kashmir. Critics of the Hindu nationalist-led government in India, as well as Kashmiris, have deemed this move illegal, viewing it as an attempt to weaken the Muslim-majority population of Kashmir by encouraging Hindu settlers.

In response to this controversial action, the Pakistani government designated August 5 as Kashmir Black Day in 2020. This day is now observed annually in Pakistan as a reaction to the change in Kashmir’s status.
