This innovation is made possible through proxy technology, which enables users to connect to WhatsApp via servers run by volunteers and organizations promoting free speech around the world.
Offline Access Through Proxy Technology
The development of this feature comes in response to situations like internet blackouts, where connectivity disruptions have made it difficult for people to stay in touch with their loved ones. WhatsApp aims to provide a reliable communication solution for users in areas where internet access is limited or non-existent.
Privacy and Security Assurance
WhatsApp has assured users that their privacy remains intact when using proxy servers. According to the company’s statement: “Connecting through a proxy preserves WhatsApp’s high level of privacy and security. Your messages will still be encrypted end-to-end, ensuring that they remain between you and the person with whom you’re communicating and are not visible to anyone in between, including proxy servers, WhatsApp, and Meta.”
Addressing Internet Shutdowns
The company hopes that there will be no internet shutdowns in 2024, as such disruptions violate human rights and prevent people from accessing essential aid. However, if shutdowns continue, WhatsApp believes that proxy solutions will benefit those in need of secure and reliable communication.
How to Connect via Proxy Servers
To use WhatsApp without an internet connection, users on both Android and iPhone can follow these steps to connect via proxy servers:
For Android Users:
- Ensure WhatsApp is updated to the latest version.
- Go to “Chats” > “More Options” > “Settings.”
- Under “Storage and Data,” select “Proxy.”
- Choose “Use Proxy.”
- Enter the proxy address after selecting “Set Proxy.”
- Click “Save.”
A checkmark will indicate a successful connection. If you are unable to send or receive messages, the proxy might be blocked. You can long-press the blocked proxy address to remove it and enter a new proxy address.
For iPhone Users:
- Ensure WhatsApp is updated to the latest version.
- Go to WhatsApp settings.
- Under “Storage and Data,” select “Proxy.”
- Choose “Use Proxy.”
- Enter the proxy address and select “Save.”
A checkmark will appear when the connection is successful.
Important Note: If you use a third-party proxy, your IP address will be shared with the proxy provider. WhatsApp does not provide third-party proxies.
