London: A British court has sentenced British preacher Anjem Choudary to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years after being found guilty of terrorism charges.
Anjem Choudary was accused of continuing to direct and support the banned group Al-Muhajiroun, declared a terrorist organization by the British government, and providing online guidance for the group from 2014 onwards Al-Muhajiroun was banned in 2010.
The court found that Choudary’s organization aimed to promote terrorism and radicalize young individuals into extremist ideologies.
Judge Wall told Choudary that he would be over 85 years old before being considered for release, and even then, release would depend on evidence of a significant change in his mindset. “If the parole board never deems you safe for release, you will remain in prison for the rest of your life,” the judge stated.
The trial at Woolwich Crown Court was conducted under the UK’s anti-terrorism laws. Prosecutors stated that Choudary had been giving instructions to a terrorist organization for an extended period after 2014.
The 57-year-old Anjem Choudary, a father of five, used to speak under the Islamic Thinkers Society in New York. Opponents and prosecutors claim that the Islamic Thinkers Society is essentially another name for Al-Muhajiroun. The investigation into Choudary was carried out jointly by the London Metropolitan Police, the New York Police Department, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
