New Delhi: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become blinded by its hatred towards Islam and Muslims. For over two decades, the BJP has been intent on isolating Muslims within Indian society. These efforts have now reached an extreme level with the passing of a bill for life imprisonment over the conspiracy theory of ‘Love Jihad’ propagated by right-wing Hindu nationalists.
The assembly of Uttar Pradesh, a northern state in India, has approved a bill against the conspiracy theory of ‘Love Jihad,’ which allows for a fine of 500,000 rupees and imprisonment for up to 20 years or life. The aim of this bill is to prevent Hindu girls from converting to Islam of their own volition and marrying Muslim boys.
Indian right-wing extremists have long accused Muslim youth of luring Hindu girls or pressuring them into converting to Islam and then marrying them. Hindu extremists have termed this ‘Love Jihad.’ Efforts are being made in several states to create laws to intimidate Hindu girls who are inclined towards Islam.
Uttar Pradesh is governed by the BJP under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath. During his tenure, numerous measures have been taken to spread hatred against Muslims throughout the state. Many Muslims have been killed on the pretext of transporting beef, many mosques and Muslim residences have been bulldozed and several Muslims have been lynched by Hindutva mobs.
The Modi government has been striving during its fifteen years in power to promote Hindu extremism by inciting hatred against Muslims to maintain its vote bank. This is why, across India, ordinary Hindus are increasingly being frightened into believing that if they do not vote for Hindu organizations and political parties, the country will fall into the hands of Muslims and other minorities, which was the gist of BJP’s election campaign this year.
