Dhaka: The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh has decided to ban Jamaat-e-Islami, a move seen as a traditional act of political harassment.
According to international news agencies, following the recent protests against the quota system in public sector jobs, the Hasina government has opted to use traditional political tactics to impose a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatrashibir.
Bangladeshi Minister of Law Anisul Haque announced that the decision to ban Jamaat-e-Islami will be finalized after a significant consultation with the Minister of Home Affairs today. Following this consultation, an executive order will be issued to officially ban Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and Islami Chhatrashibir in the country.
He accused Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir of inciting the protests against the quota system in government jobs.
Meanwhile, leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh have denounced the Hasina government’s decision as illegal, unconstitutional, and extrajudicial.
