Rawalpindi: Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, stated that the ongoing protest (dharna) has brought a ray of hope to 250 million people in the country.
Speaking at the protest in Rawalpindi, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman remarked that Independent Power Producer (IPP) agreements started during the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) era, and negotiations with 35 companies took place under the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. He noted that governments of Musharraf, PPP, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and PTI have all made agreements with IPPs. The protest has instilled hope among 250 million people, and they intend to pressure the government into yielding to their demands.
Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman also criticized the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), claiming that its 22,000 employees are involved in corruption, resulting in a loss of one trillion rupees. He expressed gratitude to the PTI’s founding chairman for acknowledging the protest, inviting him to join and stating they would welcome him warmly.
He emphasized that banks benefit the most from the country’s financial decline, pointing out that interest (riba) is prohibited and should not exist. He noted that rising interest rates lead to debt repayment rather than principal reduction. Pakistan’s internal and external debt amounts to 65 trillion rupees, benefiting the banks.
Furthermore, Hafiz Naeem urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to announce that ministers and government officers will not use vehicles above 1300cc. He questioned why the Prime Minister couldn’t implement this measure, suggesting it could save the nation 350 billion rupees.
He announced that the protest would move to Governor House in Karachi, followed by demonstrations in Lahore and Multan, with plans to expand the movement nationwide.
