Government Should Publicize IPPs Agreements, Says Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman

Rawalpindi: The chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, has demanded that the government make public the ‘illegal’ agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

While addressing participants on the fourth day of Jamaat-e-Islami’s ongoing sit-in, he stated that due to the government’s poor policies and high electricity bills, people are being driven to suicide.

He praised the participants of the sit-in for setting a new precedent despite all difficulties. Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman claimed that apart from Jamaat-e-Islami, no other party can truly represent Pakistan’s 250 million people.

He strongly criticized the government’s attempts to prevent Jamaat-e-Islami’s female workers from participating in Lahore, calling it a clear sign of the government’s cowardice.

Criticizing capacity payments to IPPs, the Jamaat-e-Islami leader said that the public should not pay taxes and electricity bills. “We have demanded the removal of capacity charges from electricity bills,” he added.

He also called for an audit of all IPPs, stating that the circular debt of 2600 billion rupees has severely impacted people’s lives.

He demanded that government employees’ fuel and electricity allowances be revoked, lamenting that government officials are using 1300cc cars, while during former Prime Minister Muhammad Khan Junejo’s tenure, this benefit was limited to 1000cc cars.

Regarding petrol prices, he urged the abolition of the petroleum levy and the adjustment of petroleum product prices accordingly.
