Karachi: Under the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan’s leader, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, convoys have started departing from Karachi to participate in the sit-in at Islamabad’s D-Chowk, set to begin on July 26. This protest, part of Jamaat-e-Islami’s “Haq Do Awam Ko” movement, is against the rising inflation, IMF and federal government’s oppressive budget, excessive taxes on salaried classes, and skyrocketing costs of petrol, gas, and electricity.
Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief, Monem Zafar Khan, flagged off the first convoy departing via Khyber Mail train from Cantt Station. He announced that more convoys would travel to Islamabad using buses and other vehicles. The platform at Cantt Station was filled with enthusiastic party members chanting slogans against inflation, increased electricity prices, and the government.
In his address to the departing participants, Monem Zafar Khan highlighted that the “Haq Do Karachi Ko” movement for the legitimate rights and resolution of issues of Karachi’s 3.5 million residents has progressed into the “Haq Do Awam Ko” movement across the country. He criticized the current coalition government of PML-N, MQM, PPP, and the previous PDM government for failing to address public issues and exacerbating inflation. He condemned the oppressive budget that burdened salaried and poor citizens with taxes instead of targeting the landed gentry and elite. He also criticized the continuous rise in petrol and electricity prices and the exploitative agreements made with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Monem Zafar Khan further asserted that the current government does not reflect public opinion but is a product of fraudulent Form 47. He claimed that Karachi’s citizens have rejected PPP and MQM due to their incompetence and poor governance, yet these parties were imposed on Karachi again using manipulated election results. He held MQM and PPP responsible for the destruction and neglect of Karachi, stating that they have failed to address the city’s issues in the past and will continue to do so in the future.
He demanded that instead of holding new elections, the results should be released according to Form 45. He called for the rollback of taxes imposed on the salaried and general public in the budget, the imposition of taxes on landlords and feudal lords, the removal of taxes and oppressive slab systems from electricity bills, and a reduction in the prices of essential goods, including electricity, gas, and petrol. He also called for those responsible for making anti-public agreements with IPPs to be held accountable before the public and demanded that the Sindh government ensure the rights of Karachi’s citizens.
