Imran Khan, Senior PTI Leaders Acquitted in Azadi March Vandalism Case

Islamabad: In a significant legal victory for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a local court in Islamabad has acquitted PTI founder Imran Khan and senior leaders Sheikh Rashid and Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the Azadi March case. The court’s decision, delivered by Judicial Magistrate Malik Muhammad Imran, also exonerated Sadaqat Abbasi and Ali Nawaz Awan of all charges.

The case, lodged in 2022 at Islamabad’s I-9 police station, accused the PTI leaders of violating Section 144 and engaging in acts of vandalism during the Azadi March, a rally aimed at toppling the then coalition government.

In a related development, the court also acquitted PTI leader Shehryar Khan Afridi and other party workers who faced charges of arson and vandalism during the events of May 9. This ruling marks a crucial turn in the legal battles against PTI members, providing much-needed relief to the party.

The charges stemmed from incidents on May 27, 2022, when Islamabad police filed cases against 150 individuals, including Imran Khan and other prominent PTI leaders, following allegations of arson and vandalism in the capital. Evidence included footage from Safe City cameras and private TV news channels, leading to the arrest of at least 39 people.

The Azadi March was part of PTI’s campaign to challenge the “US-backed” coalition government that took power after Imran Khan’s ousting through a vote of no confidence. The rally was portrayed as a struggle for “real freedom” and aimed to liberate the nation from perceived external influence.
