American Woman Scammed into Buying Rs. 300 Jewellery for Rs. 6 Crore in India

New Delhi: A shocking case of fraud has emerged in Jaipur, India, where an American woman claims she was deceived into purchasing artificial jewellery worth Rs 300 for a staggering Rs 6 crore by a father-son jeweller duo.

According to Indian media, the American woman, Cherish Nortez, was sold jewelry worth 300 rupees for 6 crore rupees. She had bought the jewelry from a shop in Jaipur’s Johari Bazaar, where she was deceived by the shopkeeper who gave her the fake jewellery. The purchase was accompanied by a hallmark certificate claiming the jewellery’s purity, which turned out to be fake.

Upon returning to the US and displaying the jewellery at an exhibition in April this year, Cherish discovered that it was not authentic. Subsequently, she revisited India, Jaipur, lodged a complaint against the jewellers, Gaurav Soni and Rajendra Soni, and sent the pieces for independent testing, which confirmed the deception.

The American woman filed a complaint with the Jaipur police. She has also sought assistance from the American embassy in this matter, prompting the Jaipur police to intensify investigations.

According to Indian police, both the shopkeeper, Gaurav Soni, and his father have fled. Special teams have been formed to apprehend both individuals.

Indian media also reports that the American woman informed the police that she had contacted Gaurav Soni, the shopkeeper, through Instagram in 2022.
