Jesus Christ, or as we Muslims know him by his Arabic name, āHazrat Isa (A.S),” is one of the great prophets in Islam. Well, for Christians, Jesus Christ is the son of God, but in our Islamic teachings, Jesus Christ is the prophet of Allah, and we view him as a precursor to the final prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). Jesus Christ, or Hazrat Isa (A.S) in Islamic teachings, is mentioned in the Holy Quran about twenty-five times, often in the form of āIsa Ibn Maryam,ā meaning āIsa, Son of Maryam.” To us Muslims, Hazrat Isa was born miraculously to the virgin Hazrat Maryam in Bethlehem in todayās West Bank, Palestine. For us Muslims, Hazrat Isa, as mentioned earlier, was born without a father through a miracle by Allah, and as a messenger of Allah, his objective was to preach the message of love, compassion, and forgiveness. Heās also the prophet who was raised to heaven by Allah instead of getting crucified. The one who was crucified, who many Christians believe was Jesus Christ, was a lookalike of Jesus Christ.
The love for Jesus Christ in Islam comes from the recognition of his exemplary character, teachings, and ethical principles. As mentioned earlier, in Islam, we see Jesus Christ as a precursor to our final prophet, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who held Hazrat Isa (A.S), or Jesus Christ, in the highest esteem. For Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he sees Jesus Christ as a noble messenger and righteous servant of Allah. For many of us Muslims, we still believe that Jesus Christ will return to Earth at the end of times to establish justice and change chaos into peace and righteousness. In Islam, Jesus Christ was given the Arabic title “Al-Masih,ā which means āthe Messiah,ā since he was known to have the ability to heal people who were suffering from illness; such ability was given to him by Allah.
Yes, the theological perspectives might differ between Islam and Christianity regarding Jesus, but the moral and spiritual teachings attributed to Jesus Christ are celebrated by both faiths. Fundamentally, the appreciation of Jesus in Islam is based on the recognition of his importance as a prophet of righteousness, highlighting the shared principles that unite various religious groups. In the Holy Quran, there are several chapters mentioning Jesus Christ, including his history, birth, and the events that took place in his life. His miracles gifted to him by Allah are mentioned from time to time. In a world facing anarchy and being divided due to religious beliefs, the shared love for Jesus can unite the Christian and Islamic brotherhood, where unity can be achieved amidst diversity. It highlights that even with theological differences, there is still a common ground where, as humans, we can stand united with shared values and aspirations. As we navigate the complex terrain of religious pluralism, the shared love for Jesus stands as a testament to the potential for harmony and cooperation between Islam and Christianity.
