Journalist Abducted in Karachi, Safely Released

In a shocking turn of events, journalist Syed Muhammad Askari, who was abducted upon returning from an evening event near Qayyumabad Interchange in Karachi on Saturday night, has safely returned home, putting an end to the distressing ordeal. The circumstances surrounding his abduction and subsequent release remain unclear, as no official statement has been released regarding the matter.

The abduction and disappearance of Askari is a serious violation of Articles 9 and 10 of the Constitution, which guarantee the right to life and liberty. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has strongly condemned this act and demanded his immediate release.

The HRCP has called on all democratic voices to condemn Askari’s abduction, emphasizing the importance of protecting journalists and their right to freedom of expression. The HRCP also highlighted that the continued abduction of journalists without any charges raises concerns about the state’s commitment to democracy and its capacity to tolerate criticism and opposition.

Following the news of Askari’s disappearance, the HRCP urged the Sindh home secretary and inspector general of police to take immediate action and recover the missing journalist within 24 hours. The commission has also requested a detailed report on the incident within 36 hours.

While the details of Askari’s abduction and release are yet to be revealed, his safe return has brought immense relief to his family, friends, and colleagues. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks journalists face while carrying out their duties in pursuit of truth and unbiased reporting.

Askari’s abduction and subsequent release highlight the need for immediate action to prevent such occurrences in the future. The safety of journalists should be prioritized, allowing them to carry out their duties without fear or intimidation. While celebrating Askari’s safe return, it is important to remember that there are still journalists who remain missing or face threats to their safety. The media community will continue to stand together in demanding justice and ensuring the safety of those who bring us the news we rely on.
