‘Spiderwoman’ smashes speed climbing world record for women

XIANMEN, China: Indonesian speed climber, Aries Susanti Rahayu, has been dubbed ‘Spiderwoman’ for smashing world record at the IFSC Climbing World Cup in China.

Rahayu finished the 15-metre course in astounding 6.995 seconds.

She defeated Yi Ling Song of China- the world no. 1, who held the previous top record of 7.101 seconds- in the final.

Video of the performance has been viewed more than 6.1 million times and retweeted over 85,000 times since it was uploaded on Twitter.

Rahayu scales the near-vertical wall, set at an angle of 95 degrees, with such ease and grace it looks effortless.

The 24-year-old gold medalist told media that she was “very grateful for this achievement and also for the endless post”.

Team Manager Asep Rachmat celebrated the feat by saying: “We are grateful for Aries’ achievement today, both the gold medal and for breaking the world record.”

Speed climbing is one of the three sports to debut in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Rahayu will definitely be the one to watch at next year’s Games.
