Nawaz Sharif in hot waters again

ISLAMABAD: A joint investigation team constituted by the Supreme Court to probe the transfer of Pakpattan shrine’s land in 1985 found Nawaz Sharif responsible for the illegal transfer of the land.

The JIT head Hussain Asghar told the apex court that the former Prime Minister had transferred the land illegally in 1985 when he was chief minister of Punjab.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the case pertaining to the transfer of 14,000 kanals of land of the Pakpattan shrine to Dewan Ghulam Qutab in 1985.

JIT head Dr Hussain Asghar submitted the inquiry report in the court.

The inquiry report stated that the then CM Punjab Nawaz Sharif had illegally transferred the land. “The first inquiry report submitted in 2015 held the then-chief minister responsible, however, in 2016 another report was prepared and the then provincial chief minister’s name was deleted from it,” the JIT head informed the court.

The then provincial government headed by Nawaz Sharif also transferred the land of Hujra Shah Muqeem and Hafiz Jamal shrine, the court was further informed.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that the lower court and the high court had ruled the notification of the donated land cannot be withdrawn, then under which law the notification was withdrawn.

Nawaz’s counsel Munawar Dogal told the court that his client had denied withdrawing the notification.

The court directed Nawaz and Punjab government to submit replies to the inquiry report within two weeks and adjourned the hearing of the case.
